Online Medical Degrees - Becoming a Doctor Online

Many people dream of being a doctor, it is one of those jobs that millions of kids want to grow up and do. The problem is that the road to becoming a doctor is long and expensive and many people find that it is just not an option. The growing trend in online education has started to make university a more realistic possibility for a lot of people. Unfortunately you can't get an online medical degree, you will need to attend school full time to become a doctor. You can however do your undergraduate work online and save money that way.

The biggest reason that you can't become a doctor online is that the bulk of the training for a doctor is hands on. There is simply no way that you can qualify to be a doctor without actually treating patients. This is obviously not going to happen online therefore there are now online medical schools. There is a possibility that in the future technology may make it possible to train doctors over the internet but that is a long way down the road. Someday medical students may see virtual patients and that may be done online but it is doubtful that even this will fully replace seeing actual patients. Interaction with real people is a critical aspect of medical training and probably always will be.

Not all of a doctors training is hands on and there is a significant amount of theory involved as well, and there have been some attempts to offer this online. About half of the training at medical school is theory while the other half is hands on. A couple of medical schools in the Caribbean experimented with offering the theory parts online, although they no longer do this. They stopped apparently because the licensing boards in the US, where most of the students came from, refused to license doctors who had been trained this way. There have been a few other suggestions about starting up a medical school that offers the theory part online, but so far nothing has come of it.

If you really want to be a doctor you are going to have to bit the bullet and attend medical school full time. Although you can't attend medical school online you can do your undergraduate study online. Medical schools normally require a bachelors degree for admission and for the most part this can be done online. There are also specific courses that are required and some of them, particularly the chemistry courses will require laboratory work which isn't all that practical in an online course. Most of the other courses can be done online and this can be a great way to help you save for medical school. By working full time and getting your bachelors degree online you can save up money and graduate medical school with far less debt.
