Online Design Degrees - Becoming a Designer Online

Design is one of the most sought after career fields there is. It is one of the few places that people with an artistic side can earn a decent living. Unfortunately because it is so highly sought after it is very difficult to break into. Most people have to enter the career field by paying their dues in an unrelated job at a company that employs designers in the hopes that they will one day be able to transfer over. A lot of these people will find that it is best to start working as soon as possible and to get an online design degree.

There are a number of advantages to getting a design degree online, the biggest of which is that you can work while you study. Most students have an enormous amount of debt when they graduate but if you get your degree online you can work full time and study on the side. This means you should be able to graduate without having to take out a student loan. Another advantage of being able to work while you get your degree is that you can start your career sooner, this is especially valuable in a career like design. Very few designers are hired off the street, most start working for a company in a different job before getting a chance to transfer into the design field. If you do your degree online you can get this part of paying your dues out of the way sooner.

The other advantage of doing an online design degree is that you can usually do it faster. Many schools offer self paced courses which means you can start when you like and work through them as fast as you want. Traditional schools require you to start and finish your courses on specific dates, but at an online school you can start whenever it is convenient for you. Since you can work at your own pace you can also get the courses done faster, if you want to complete a course in a month that is entirely possible. On the other hand if you need to work at a slower pace that is possible as well.

There are however some disadvantages to studying for an online design degree, the biggest being the fact that you don't interact with the other students. This is especially relevant for a subject like design which is usually a collaborative process. Having to work alone on all of your projects is often difficult, it is also different from the way things will be done when you join the workforce. The lack of interaction with your fellow students also means that there is no social aspect to school. For a lot of people this is an important part of attending college, most people make lifelong friends while attending school. Getting a degree from an online school means that this won't happen. This is something that you need to keep in mind if you are considering an online design degree.
