Buying textbooks at the start of the school year is a part of being a college student. At the start of each semester you will need to buy all the books you need, unfortunately so does everybody else. The normal way to do this is to buy them at the school bookstore. The result is that you end up standing in a very long line to buy a very expensive textbook. Buying online offers a number of advantages since it allows you to avoid the experience.
The main advantage of buying your textbooks online is obvious you can save money. You can certainly buy cheap textbooks online. The big question that you have to ask is whether you are going to buy new or used textbooks. If price is the primary consideration than your best option is going to be getting used books. Every year there are thousands of students selling their textbooks from the year before so you can often get yours at a fraction of the retail price. There is however one major issue with buying used.
The issue with buying used textbooks online is that the publishers have started to make an effort to put a stop to it. The way they do this is by publishing a new edition of the book every couple of years. This immediately makes the older editions worthless, since one of the things that they usually change are the problem sets. If you have an older edition you probably won't be able to do your homework. If you are going to buy used it is absolutely critical that you make sure that you are getting the correct edition, otherwise you are wasting your money.
The other option that you have when you are buying textbooks online is to buy them new. This removes the risk of getting an older edition. The downside is that the price will be much higher than it is for used. Nevertheless the price will also be quite a bit lower than at the student bookstore. School bookstores are rarely the place to get the best price. There are lots of websites that offer the textbooks for sale at a much lower price. Some of them specialize in selling textbooks but don't forget to check out the regular online book retailers. They often sell textbooks at very low prices as well.
The other big advantage of buying textbooks online is that you don't have to go to the student bookstore. Anybody who has tried to buy their textbooks at the student bookstore knows what a chaotic experience this is. Every student on campus has to buy all of the books they will need that semester all at the same time. The place is packed, you will be stuck in a line up forever and even then there is a good chance they will be sold out of the book you need. Buying online will save you from an enormous amount of hassle.
